Megan Fennerty

Masters Student

Megan Fennerty is an MSc student in Geography at the University of Victoria (UVic), where her research focuses on sustainable cacao agroforestry in southern Belize. Working with the Belize Foundation for Research and Environmental Education and local cacao farmers, she is exploring how ecological conditions and management practices influence the health, resilience, and productivity of Criollo cacao. Her research brings together ecological field measurements and farmer knowledge, with broader interests in agroecology, sustainable land management, climate resilience, and human-environment relationships.
Megan holds a BSc in Environmental Studies and Geography from UVic and a background in Horticulture (Agricultural Sciences) from the University of the Fraser Valley. Her interest in cacao and tropical agriculture grew from nearly two years living in Nicaragua and later co-founding Cacao Sol, a small business focused on sustainably sourced cacao/chocolate. She has also worked in wildfire research with Natural Resources Canada, applying GIS, remote sensing, and ecological field methods to forest and wildfire research with the intention of improving forest management practices in British Columbia.

Megan was awarded a 2026 Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Master’s from SSHRC to support her research in Belize.

In her free time, Megan loves to practice acro yoga, scuba diving, skiing, hiking or learning a new crafting skill with her pals.
