Rachel Friedman
Postdoctoral fellow
Rachel (she/her) is Banting postdoctoral research fellow. Her current research examines policy options to govern sustainability in transnational food supply chains. Broadly, she applies a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches to address issues of sustainability within food systems, climate change vulnerability and adaptation, gender and social justice. Before joining the Environmental Governance Group, Rachel was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Australian National University’s Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions, working on food systems resilience in the Indo-Pacific. She completed a PhD on social equity implications of community-based forest management in Indonesian Borneo at the University of Queensland in 2020, and an MPhil at University of Oxford exploring climate change vulnerability and gender in Ghanaian cacao production. Previously, she worked on climate-smart agriculture and international environmental policy processes for EcoAgriculture Partners, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, and on food systems justice at Good Food Oxford. Overall, Rachel’s research is motivated by the prospect of achieving more ethical, equitable, and environmentally sustainable food systems.
